A Week with No Broccoli

No Broccoli, you say??? How can that be so? Isn't that one of the two green standard vegetables in a given week at the Deal house? Yes, it is, but as we found out quickly on Thursday night, our produce box from our farm to table delivery included NO broccoli. As promised, here were the contents of produce box #1. It was a good variety of different fruits and vegetables. Possibly, too good a variety, as there were smaller amounts of each item, but more on that in later blogs.

Vegetables (and veggie-like fruits)
1 Big Bunch Rainbow Chard
3 Large Carrots
1 Bunch Basil
1 Leek
2 Tomatoes
2 Red Onions
3 Red Beets
5 Small Purple Potatoes
1 Bunch Mystery Salad Greens

Fruits
1 Red Apple
1 Green Apple
2 Bananas
1 Lemon
1 Ruby Red Grapefruit

Mystery greens you ask? How hard can it be to identify salad greens? Well, you be the judge. Here is a picture of the greens. And you'll see the poll to the right. Turns out they WERE my first guess, but I wasn't originally 100% convinced. I was thrown by the long stems...

The Adventure Begins

I am a works-from-home mother of a caveman toddler and a sometimes trend-skeptical husband. When I announced I wanted to try buying more local foods and perhaps participating in a farm share, he was a little wary. First, unless it was a box of all fruit, he worried our little caveman would have nothing to do with its contents. Second, he was a little concerned about our ability to use all the farm goodness, when we are lucky if we can plan 4 days of meals in advance. Nonetheless, when an online discounter offered up a trial membership to a local farm to table delivery service, he acquiesced. Today, our food adventure begins. We will receive our first mystery produce box this evening, opening up a world of possibilities.

I look at it as our very own home version of Chopped, what can you do with the mystery basket in 30 minutes??? I hope to use this blog to chronicle the yummy goodness that results in our kitchen. First, I'll post a picture of the box and its contents. Then, as the days go by, pictures and recipes of our adventure. Hopefully, it will inspire my friends, old and new, to cook, eat and enjoy.
